Our “WOW Factor” Buyer’s Guide

It can be hard to know which vitamin water is the best for you, and what the benefits of each are.

Not all vitamin waters are created equal. Some have high levels of sugar and calories, while others don't have enough of the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs.

We know that you still have questions. No problem. We have the answers. Here are the most frequently asked questions about Vitamin Water and our answers to them.

Are vitamin waters good for you?

There is no definitive answer to this question since vitamin waters and other drinks fortified with vitamins and minerals can be helpful for some people and harmful for others.

Many of these drinks are high in sugar, which can contribute to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

That said, if you choose vitamin water that is low in added sugar, it may provide some nutritional benefits as well as hydration.

Is vitamin water better than water?

Water is essential for life and vitamin water does have some added vitamins and minerals, but it's not necessarily better than just drinking plain water.

The problem with vitamin water is that it often contains a lot of added sugar, which can potentially contribute to weight gain and other health problems like diabetes. But if you can find a low-calorie, low-sugar, keto-friendly option, then vitamin water may be a good option for you.

Water is usually preferred but if you can find vitamin water that contains only high-quality water plus vitamins and minerals (and other organic sources of nutrients), then vitamin water MAY be a better option.

The bottom line is that vitamin water is not better than plain water, but it can be a good alternative for people who don't like the taste of plain water.

Just be sure to check the label for added sugar and calories, and choose a keto-friendly option if you're on a low-carb diet.

If you're looking for a nutritional boost, try adding a bit of chopped fruit or vegetables to your water instead. And, as always, drink in moderation.

Can you drink vitamin water every day?

Yes, you can drink vitamin water every day. However, it's important to be mindful of how much sugar is in each bottle of vitamin water.

Most varieties have around 32 grams of sugar per bottle, which is more than 8 teaspoons of sugar. Consuming too much added sugar can contribute to weight gain and increase your risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Instead, try drinking plain water or seltzer water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime for flavor. If you're looking for a nutritional boost, try adding a bit of chopped fruit or vegetables to your water instead, or find vitamin water that does just that without the extra sugar and artificial flavors.

What’s better vitamin water or Gatorade?

It depends on what you need. Vitamin water is a good source of vitamins and minerals, while Gatorade is mainly a source of electrolytes.

If you're dehydrated, Gatorade is the better choice because it contains sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes that can help rehydrate your body. If you're looking for a beverage that provides some vitamins and minerals, vitamin water is a better choice.

What are the healthiest drinks for you?

Water is the healthiest drink for you, followed by unsweetened tea. Both water and unsweetened tea are calorie-free and help flush out toxins from your body. They also hydrate your body and keep your cells functioning properly.

Other healthy drinks include low-fat milk, which is a good source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D, and fruit juice diluted with water. However, it's important to avoid drinking too many sugary drinks, which can lead to weight gain and other health problems.

Will vitamin water give you kidney stones?

It is possible to get kidney stones from vitamin water, but it is not common.

Kidney stones form when minerals in the urine crystallize and collect into small stones. The most common type of kidney stone is a calcium oxalate stone.

Some people are more likely to develop kidney stones than others. Factors that increase your risk of developing kidney stones include: being male, having a family history of kidney stones, eating a high-protein diet, being dehydrated, and taking medications such as diuretics (water pills) and some antibiotics.

Some people have reported getting kidney stones from drinking vitamin water because it is high in antioxidants and minerals such as magnesium and potassium.

If you are at risk for developing kidney stones, talk to your doctor before drinking vitamin water or any other type of antioxidant supplement.

What drinks are good for dehydration?

Water is the best drink for dehydration, followed by sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade. These drinks are designed to replenish electrolytes and sugars that are lost when you sweat.

Tea, coffee, and sodas are not good for dehydration because they contain caffeine and sugar, which can actually make you more dehydrated.

Is vitamin water good for a hangover?

There is no scientific evidence that vitamin water can help with a hangover. In fact, it's possible that drinking any type of liquid while you're drunk will just further dilute your blood and slow down the rate at which your body removes the alcohol from your system.

That said if you're feeling dehydrated from a night of drinking, rehydrating with electrolyte-rich fluids like Gatorade or Powerade can help to restore balance to your body and make you feel better.

Do you need to refrigerate vitamin water?

You don't need to refrigerate vitamin water, but it's recommended that you do.

Most bottled waters, including vitamin water, are pasteurized. This means that the water is heated to a high temperature in order to kill any bacteria or other organisms that may be present. Unfortunately, this also destroys many of the vitamins and minerals in the water.

Refrigerating your vitamin water will help keep the vitamins and minerals in the water from breaking down. It will also help keep the water cold, which is a good thing since cold beverages are more refreshing on a hot day than warm beverages.

Does vitamin water have electrolytes?

Yes, vitamin water does contain electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and play a vital role in many bodily functions, including muscle contraction, nerve impulses, and maintaining the balance of water and fluids in the body. Sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium are all electrolytes.

Our Best Advice

Looking for the best vitamin water? We’ve spent dozens of hours reading thousands of reviews on Amazon from verified customers to find the perfect vitamin water for your needs. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, we need to be clear that water is always the best drink to take when you are thirsty.  Staying hydrated is important and you need a larger amount of water per day than most people realize for optimal health.  Vitamin water may sound like an improvement to plain, old water, but it generally isn't.

The problem with most brands of vitamin water is that they add a lot of sugar and artificial flavoring to their drinks.  And it makes sense.  The reason people buy vitamin water is that they know they need to stay hydrated but drinking plain, old water is boring or they just don't like the taste.

Perhaps they live somewhere where clean, spring water is hard to get or expensive. Perhaps they are just particular about their tastes.

Whatever the reason, the truth is that plain, old water is calorie-free, without sugars, without additives, and simply healthy for you to drink.  Vitamin water, even the good stuff, is going to have some calories, some sugar, and some "extras." The tradeoff may be worth it to you but just be careful to read the ingredients label and don't assume anything.  Enough said.

One of the great things about vitamin water is the taste after all so let's talk about that.  Whether you are someone who likes kiwi strawberry or fruit punch, orange flavor, or just lemonade vitamin water, there is something for everyone in this market.  (Mixed berry flavor is one of my favorite flavors.)

Of course, the best vitamin water flavors are created from natural flavors without artificial sugars or flavors.  Other flavors include blueberry lavender (which is refreshingly sweet), acai blueberry pomegranate, and even squeezed lemonade (for refreshing hydration).

The extra hydration you get from the electrolytes that are usually included is an added bonus.  And to mix things up a bit, you can get your favorite flavor with zero calorie content and even choose which vitamins and minerals you want (or need) to include.

A word of warning.  Although it is called vitamin water and it certainly contains vitamins and minerals, it is by no means the same thing as taking a multivitamin every day.

Think of it as a supplemental source rather than as your main source of vitamins and minerals each day.  You can get some extra Vitamin E or some extra citric acid if you are getting some orange juice or squeezed lemonade type of enhanced water.

There is also a question of whether you can consider your popular vitamin water flavors as a source of "vitamin water energy."  And the answer is yes and no.  Yes, in general, as a supplemental source of energy but no, in specific, if you are thinking it may function as a pre-workout drink.  It doesn't.

Especially if you are choosing a zero-sugar option (since you may be drinking them multiple times per day), the added energy boost simply won't be there.

The zero-sugar version is not meant to rehydrate you after a workout (as a post-workout drink) either since that is when you need some good electrolytes and sugar for energy.  So pre-workout energy or post-workout rehydration is also not the point of vitamin water.

Vitamin water is about replacing water as your normal hydration beverage during the whole day.  Some people prefer a flavored drink.  Vitamin water solves that problem and they throw some vitamins and minerals in as well.

You could also throw in some extra ingredients yourself if you want something more "enhanced."  A bit of orange juice or squeezed lemonade is always a good choice but you can bits of fruit and/or vegetables for more options.

Getting extra vitamin C (and vitamin E) is never a bad thing but be careful to make sure that there is zero sugar (or close to it).

The rest is just about finding a great vitamin water flavor that has a refreshing taste.  If you aren't sure, then try some and experiment a little bit.  The kiwi strawberry flavor is a good place to start but the best idea is to first of all figure out which brand you trust and which also has a number of flavors for you to experiment with.

If they only have a few vitamin water flavors but they include vitamin C and vitamin E and a few good minerals, then go ahead and try what they have to offer.

You may like the acai blueberry pomegranate or the blueberry lavender (or not) but if the nutritional facts are where you need them to be in terms of a zero-sugar version for example, then you can afford to experiment a little.

Flavored water is a very personal decision and not everyone likes the natural flavors.  Not everyone likes the unsweetened style of most organic, natural ingredients (although I find the kiwi strawberry refreshingly sweet).  You have to try it out.

They can be a source of refreshing hydration but only if you actually drink them on a regular basis.  They can provide vitamin water energy but, again, only if you use them.  As we often say, the best supplement is the one you take on a regular basis.

So long as the nutrition facts are on point and you can buy them regularly on Amazon or in your local store, then you can afford to experiment a little.  And if you don't like one brand, look for other brands and try them out.

Once you find the flavor you like, you will have found an excellent source of extra vitamins and minerals and the motivation to stay hydrated all day long which is an essential part of your overall health.

With all of that being said, it is now time for us to reveal our top choice in the best vitamin waters on the market.  Drum roll, please...
